Working Time Recording: A Requirement from 2027 – Are You Ready?

Starting on 1 January 2027, all Belgian companies will be required to allow their employees to record their working hours. This measure, derived from a European directive, may initially seem like an additional administrative burden. However, when viewed from a different perspective, it can become a valuable opportunity to improve quality of working life and strengthen mutual trust between employees and employers

Why is this becoming mandatory?

In 2019, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that working time regulations can only be effectively enforced if working hours are objectively measured and recorded. Since then, most European countries have implemented this requirement. Belgium, which had been lagging behind, is now taking action by requiring employers to introduce a reliable, objective and accessible working time recording system as from January 2027.

The objective is simple: to ensure compliance with labour regulations and prevent potential abuses.

Who is affected?

All businesses without exception: from large corporations and SMEs to domestic workers. The measure is designed to ensure transparency and employee protection regardless of a company's size or industry.

What challenges will companies face?

  • Maintaining flexibility: many employers fear that time tracking could reduce trust and introduce greater rigidity into team management.

  • Choosing the right solution: time clocks, mobile applications, or integrated digital platforms. The options are numerous, but they must all be reliable and easy to use.

  • Preparing for implementation: for some SMEs, this obligation may appear burdensome at first, yet it also presents an opportunity to modernise HR management, structure work organisation more effectively and improve internal communication.

What if we see it as an opportunity?

Rather than viewing this requirement as a constraint, why not turn it into a lever for better time management, greater transparency, and improved employee wellbeing?A robust time-recording system can:

  • Simplify HR administration

  • Clarify schedules and reduce misunderstandings

  • Enhance employee wellbeing and engagement
